Suckhoedoisong.vn – A 7-years-old boy in Hanoi is the youngest patient in Vietnam who received a heart transplant from a brain dead adult and has been approved by his family for organ donation. This success has further affirmed that the doctors of Viet Duc University Hospital have constantly mastered high technology in organ transplant…

Doctors at Viet Duc University Hospital have successfully transplanted heart to pediatric patient L.X.H, 7 years old – weighing 16 kg (in Hanoi) on February 1st, 2021. This is the youngest patient in Vietnam to receive a heart transplant from an adult brain dead patient that has been approved by his family.

Assoc.Prof, Dr Nguyen Huu Uoc – Director of Cadiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Center, Viet Duc University Hospital said: H was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure at final stage 7 months ago. All the tests showed severe heart failure so the patient has to use high-dose drugs to relieve the heart’s failure continuously.

Doctors perform heart transplants for patient

Recently, his condition was getting worse, all treatment methods were almost ineffective. He only has one chance to survive if he could have a heart transplant.

Fortunately, while his life is only counted by days, H is donated by a 19-year-old male, brain-dead from a traffic accident. The organ indexes of the donor and the recipient is completely consistent, although the body index of the donor is 3.5 times higher than recipient.

“Among a very long list of patients waiting for a heart transplant, under the direct direction of Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang – Director of Viet Duc University Hospital, the hospital’s leading experts have consulted and decided to transplant the heart for LXH, because priority is given to the pediatric patient, the recipient is quite small, and his heart condition is very terrible and the patient has to use high-dose drugs to relieve the heart’s failure and can’t wait any longer. Each year, the country only has a few cases of brain death and organ donation, the opportunity to find a suitable donor for a child’s heart transplant is almost impossible”- Assoc.Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Uoc added.

After the surgery, the child got a special care at Department of Resuscitation, Cadiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Center, Viet Duc University Hospital. In 4 th day after surgery, his condition is better, hemodynamic is stable, can shit up to play and recognize medical staff, relatives, can eat and drink normally. It is known that this is the 5th heart transplant for children at Viet Duc University Hospital, but it is the youngest and lightest case.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Nghia – Director of Organ Transplantation Center, Viet Duc University Hospital said: Immediately after receiving the information that a brain-dead patient and the family agreed to donate organs, our doctors took the heart, liver, 2 kidneys for transplantation for 4 patients at Viet Duc University Hospital and 2 corneas were preserved at the Eye Bank. Currently, all the transplant patients are stable.

With high technical expertise, and good preparation, synchronization and rhythmic coordination among departments, Viet Duc University Hospital has made important marks in the organ transplant profession in Vietnam.

After the 4-days of surgery, the patient is better, hemodynamic is stable, can shit up to play and recognize medical staff, relatives, can eat and drink.

Up to now, Viet Duc University Hospital has performed 5 lung transplants, 36 heart transplants, 92 liver transplants and nearly 1100 kidney transplants. The hospital is also the nation’s leading center for brain donation and multi-organ transplantation.

All transplant patients are healthy and returned to daily life. Hopefully there will be more and more people willing to donate organs to save people for prolong life.
