On 13th December 2019, 2 weeks after her discharge, Ms. P.T.H, the first successful case of lung transplantation for congenital heart disease in Vietnam, came back to Viet Duc University Hospital for health check .

Ms. H. said that it was also 2 months and 16 days since the day she was aware about the operation. Time flies but for her, everything is still the greatest miracle in life.

Coming back to the hospital, Ms. H. shared with happiness: “I returned to normal life as mother of a 4 year-old child. I am able to actively eat, drink, take a bath and practice some in-door gentle exercises. My health has been much improved since being discharge from hospital”.

Now, Ms. H. stays at home with business at her family store, regularly takes medications and comes to the hospital for scheduled health check.

Previously, Ms. H. suffered from a congenital large atrial septal defect that due to late diagnosis, it become end stage in last 3 years. Unfortunately, there was no other solutions and she would surely die because of cardio-pulmonary failure if not being lung transplanted.

In such this situation, doctors from Viet Duc University Hospital have decided to perform a lung transplantation in combination with repair of congenital heart defect.

This 12-hour operation is with great success and considered as the confirmation of Vietnamese doctors’ capacity who has gradually mastered the technique of lung transplantation, one of the most difficult technique among organ transplantations and still not common in Vietnam.

In the past, due to overall situation of country, a lot of not-so-complicated congenital heart defects in children and adults were diagnosed in late so their lungs were damaged and unrepairable. The success of this special lung transplantation has a significant meaning and opens up opportunities for many young patients in Vietnam.

Before Ms. H. case, doctors from Viet Duc University Hospital already successfully performed 2 cases of  lung transplantation only from brain death donors. Both of them recovered well and discharged of the hospital.
