Ostomy club help in improving the awareness of the disease complication and prevention of ostomates

March 2018, the Club of Ostomates  – Ostomy (artificial anus) Club, VietDuc University Hospital is officially established and launched.

 

Meeting the expectations of patient, the Club has operated effectively and benefit to raise awareness for patients about care, reducing the risk of complications, improve quality of life.

For many different reasons such as diseases: cancer, inflammatory necrosis of ano-rectal areas, inflammatory caused stricture anus, pathological congenital diseases such as no anus or cause injury of the gastrointestinal tract as well as urinary tract doctor perform surgery to put the intestines / ureter out to abdominal wall for the purpose to drain stool/ urine turned out to help the patient maintain life. Estimated the worldwide currently about 1.5 million patients have stomy.

Despite being a common surgery is performed in gastrointestinal surgery and a basic surgical, however the complications still occurs. Even if no complications occur, it also changes the psychological, social activities of patients. Patients often face fear leaking stool, artificial anus bags bulging and appear unpleasant smell … Anxiety and embarrassment caused by artificial anus causes affecting lifestyle reduction ability, desire to work and about their sex lives, especially those who are young patients. These concerns led to the patient isolated, shy and avoid contact with social communication for quality of life gradually diminished. Many studies in the world and in the country showed that 80% of patients with artificial anus lifestyle changes after artificial anus, the majority of changes are not actively diminish quality of life. Counseling and education to patients about care for themselves and artificial

 

In 18 May 1978, in Milan, Italy, the stoma care in the world (World Council of Enterostomal Therapist – WCET) established the International Conference on the occasion of International Workshop on Stoma – Ostomy Association’s (IOA ) . After this time, the world has a lot of studies assessing the quality of life of ostomates , the factors that impact on their quality of life as well as advice and guidance Ostomy care before and after surgery. All the studies show that the full and comprehensive care help to their quality of life improves.  April 2018, the Association has organized WCET ™ 40th anniversary of establishment in Malaysia with significant activities on consultation and care of patients carrying the artificial anus.

 

Although no official figures but the estimated number of patients should have artificial anus in Vietnam is quite large. However, we do not have training centers specialized medical personnel in the care and counseling of patients carrying the stomy. Care and treatment for patients with artificial anus has not been sufficient attention and depth leads to complications both pathology and psychology affect quality of life of patients. Besides, the study refers to the care of patients carrying stomy is still modest and most of the focus on professional issues, diseases or complications not speak to the quality of their lives . Thus the establishment of the Ostomy Club significant positive patients, as well as the strengthening of professional work at the hospital.

In 2019 Ostomy Club coordinated with experts from the CONVATEC , AMG, Hollister, B.Braun firms … to organize consulting. This activities are the weekly every afternoon on Thursday about stoma care, some statistics as follows :

Counseling and support, providing documentation for patients and family members of patients

 

Free 1000 Ostomy bags for patients

 

Free milk to patients

 

Assessing the effectiveness of activities of Ostomy Club, Ass. Professor . Nguyen Duc Chinh, head of the Department of Septic Surgery, and wound care, as well as president of Club said: Currently in VietDuc University Hospital 5 Clubs such were established for the purpose approaches and best advice for patients and family members about self care for themselves, our Club is one of the clubs positive and effective activities , although there are many difficulties such as limited budget, members in remote areas, difficulties of finance or health problems. Especially in Nov. 2018 we have successfully organized the First National Workshop titled  “First Stomy Care Day ” with the experts from Malaysia, France, Japan, and over 150 delegates from the regional hospital in Hanoi were invited.

 

In the future we continue to work on, improve the content of activity and communication in order to attract broad participation and active members and colleagues, and further improves care stoma patients to help them improve integration of health and a better life.
