On March 16th, Mrs. N.T.T, 87, who lives in Ba Dinh district, Hanoi, was unexpectedly attacked by an over 30kg Bully dog when she went to a neighbor’s house.

The patient was admitted to Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) with complex crush injuries of her left forearm and severe facial wounds. Trauma surgeons performed a left distal – third forearm amputation, debridement of severe facial wounds.

According to Ms. X (grandmother T’s daughter): Because the dog’s owner did not chain him, when he saw Mrs. T walking by he charged at the 87-year-old woman and bit her. Taken aback by the sudden attack, Mrs. T felt down and couldn’t fight back. When the locals noticed the old lady, she was rescued and quickly sent to VDUH’s emergency department.

With tears in her eyes, Ms. X continued: “My mom hasn’t even fully recovered from a fall 3 months ago, yet she was viciously attacked by this dog. When I took her to the hospital, I thought she couldn’t make it. This is really devastating!”

3 days after the surgery, Mrs. T’s condition had stabilized, she was aware of her surroundings and could communicate clearly with hospital staff. The patient continued to be monitored and treated at Department of General Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery, VDUH.

Dr. Le Manh Son, PhD. MD. (Chief of Department of General Trauma and Orthopedic Surgery, VDUH) was examining Mrs. T after the surgery

Earlier, on March 14th, an 9-year-old boy from Vinh Phuc was also hospitalized after a dog attack, with a severe bite wound to his genital, degloving his penis.

Nowadays, many families still have the habit of keeping dogs as pets or house guards. But most people are very incautious when it comes to their dogs so they are not properly managed, leading to unfortunate consequences. In some cases, people could even die from dog attacks. The general public should be more cautious when dealing with unfamiliar dogs and cats so as to prevent such devastating results.
