Recently, Viet Duc University Hospital has just received Mrs. N.T.V (59 years old, native in Thanh Hoa) hospitalized due to an abdominal pain. Through exploitation, it was known that patient had a history of hysterectomy in 2018. 3 months ago, she saw signs of enlargement in her abdomen, but thought her belly was getting fat, so subjectively did not go to doctor. Only when she showed obvious symptoms of pain, difficult eating, she then went to hospital and was transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital by provincial hospital. After giving patient examination combined with laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, patient is determined to have a tumor in the small intestine mesenteric which is a frequent cause of abdominal pain.
Mr. Bui Thanh Phuc – MD, MS, Emergency Abdominal Surgery Department, Viet Duc University Hospital said: Patient has a mesenteric tumor sized 30x30cm, occupied for 3/4 of abdomen. Tumor weighing up to 10 kg have grown invading the small intestine and colon. After consultation, Ms. V was promptly operated on bowel resection, tumor resection, and colon resection. During surgery, doctor had to skillfully avoid large arteries, ureter reconstruction, but still preserved the surrounding organs such as kidney and liver. The surgery was successful. After 2 hours of surgery, doctors had the tumor removed completely from the abdomen.
Patient recovers well after surgery, eating and drinking with normal activities. Dr. Phuc added that the patient will continue to be supplemented with physical enhancement and adjuvant chemotherapy.
The patient happily shared that she was very pleased with the success of the surgery to remove tumor because she went to many hospitals, but the tumor had invaded surrounding organs so it was beyond treatment, she was transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital, a special-class surgical hospital. She seemed to have no hope for her illness, but when she came here and was enthusiastically treated and operated by doctors, patient made a miraculous recovery. Just 1 week after surgery, patient has returned to normal life.
Dr. Phuc further recommends: Patient, if detecting abnormal signs, should go to medical facilities and should not be subjective to late illness. As in the case of Ms. V, if visit hospital later, the tumor will invade major blood vessel, the ability to remove and thoroughly treat will be low.
