Acute surgical treatment of malignant colon occlusion for a female foreigner has no relative in Vietnam

Recently, Viet Duc University Hospital received a Canadian female patient, Ms. Karen, who admitted for an occlusive right colon cancer. She has been living in Vietnam for 10 years without any relative and can’t afford to pay for the hospital fee when admitting.  

 

Dr. BUI Thanh Phuc from Emergency Abdominal Surgery Department shared that on May 13th, hospital examined Ms. Karen with an bowel occlusion due to the tumor that might lead to death unless receiving properly treatment. Beside colon tumor, she had also many comorbidities including arterial hypertension, diabetes. An operation was required on emergency for patient to prevent other postoperative complications even death.

Despite a big tumor and at late stage of the patient, doctors performed laparoscopic colectomy. With professional level and modern facilities, doctors of Viet Duc University Hospital successfully performed many cases of complicated laparoscopic surgery, detected and handled many digestive cancerous lesions, brought back health and peace of mind for a lot of patients.

 

During the period of Covid-19 pandemic affecting seriously in Hanoi and over the country, Ms. Karen admitted to the hospital without any accompanying relative and even could not communicate in Vietnamese, so, it was medical staff who directly provided medical treatment as well as support for the patient to overcome linguistic barrier and to encourage throughout her hospitalization. A comprehensive care had been applied to help patient to recover as much as possible, Dr Phuc added. 

 

Ms. Karen was happy when being discharged

 

Ms. Karen was discharged after having an intensive care in hospital. She is now fully recovered, able to cook by herself and to move around normally. With so much gratitude, patient wrote a thankful letter to medical staff in Viet Duc University Hospital for taking care of her as a relative. “To all doctors and nurses in 4th floor, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your devoted care for me. I know that it is not easy at all. Your work has always been highly appreciated. Wish you all the best.”
