Vascular intervention to remove foreign object stuck inside patient’s heart

On November 11, Viet Duc University Hospital received one patient, N.T.H (54 years old) in Kim Boi, Hoa Binh who was hospitalized due to a foreign object stuck in the heart.

 

Through the exploitation, it is known that patient has a history of breast cancer since 2015, had surgery and placed a chemotherapy chamber for adjuvant chemotherapy. After finishing treatment procedure, due to fear of having to undergo interventional surgery multiple times, patient did not remove the infusion chamber (IV port). By November 2021, after 6 years, the connecting wire of IV port broke and drifted through the blood vessels and got stuck in the heart. At Viet Duc Univerisy Hospital, patient was carefully examined, and imployed the intervention to remove the foreign object, as well as the subcutaneous IV port.

 

 

Dr. Than Van Sy, MSc – Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine  Department, Viet Duc University Hospital said: Doctors had inserted interventional tool inside the heart chambers and removed foreign object within minutes. The interventional procedure went too quick and smooth that patient exclaimed in surprise, having held the fear of surgery for 6 years, did not dare to go to hospital to remove the IV port until dangerous complications occurred. After the intervention, the patient is completely stable and expected to be discharged in a day or two.

Dr. Le Thanh Dung, PhD – Head of Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine  Department, Viet Duc University Hospital shares: Foreign objects inside heart and vessels are rare, however, lately it becomes more common due to the usage of tools, equipment in diagnose and treatment for different diseases. These foreign objects can be big, small or the hardness, sharp edges are different. Hence, they might not cause any symptoms, or might cause thrombosis, embolism, puncture of vessel wall, heart, heart valves damaged, even leading to arrhythmia … Luckily, these days with modern instruments, most of foreign objects inside heart and vessels can be removed out of body with a small injection on the skin. Even though, Dr. Le Thanh Dung – PhD also emphasized, foreign objects removal from heart chambers, vessels have to be performed by experienced to avoid further damages for heart and vessels. Therefore, if the patients are in those situations, they need to be transferred to in-depth medical in order to get in-time and to get treatment properly.
