Update on deformity correction techniques in total knee replacement

Knee replacement surgery (knee arthroplasty) has gradually become popular in our country in recent years, but to achieve the best results of surgery, technical factors are extremely important. In particular, the technique of total knee replacement is considered to be the optimal treatment solution, bringing high efficiency and perfect correction of deformities of the knee joint.

  In order to update and share with doctors at Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) as well as doctors in the region about the technical advances in the field of orthopedic trauma, recently, the Center for Training and Direction of Health Activities (TDHA), VDUH has cooperated with the Department of Upper Extremity Surgery and Sports Medicine and Johnson & Johnson Vietnam Co., Ltd to organize a Scientific Conference on Deformity Correction in Total Knee Replacement.

Attending the seminar, on the side of VDUH, there were: Assoc. Nguyen Manh Khanh, MD, PhD, Deputy Director of the Hospital, Head of the Department of Upper Extremity Surgery and Sports Medicine – Chairman of conference. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Van Toan, Former Head of Upper Extremity Surgery and Sports Medicine and many doctors in fields of orthopedic trauma.

  On the side of Johnson & Johnson Vietnam Co., Ltd, there is Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Sales Director – Medical Equipment Products in Vietnam.

At the Conference, Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh, MD, PhD shared with students about the technique of correcting deformity in the knee joint. In Vietnam, the proportion of patients with severe knee deformity is often due to late arrival, restoring the mechanical axis is one of the main goals of surgery. Failure in mechanical shaft recovery is often due to instability, shank loosening, and rutting. Correction of deformity in knee replacement includes: Correction of internal deformity; Correction of eccentric deformity; Correction of folding shrinkage deformation; Control bone deficiency.

  Attending the seminar, the trainees also had the opportunities to practice on mannequin and watched videos of the total right knee replacement surgery directly performed by Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh, MD, PhD.
