Recently, doctors from the Center of Neurosurgery of Viet Duc University Hospital have successfully operated on for a 14-year-old boy suffered from epilepsy for 8 years.

N.T.D from Nghe An had his first seizure 8 years ago, now there are about 3-5 attacks every week, each seizure lasts about 1 minute on average. Seizures lasting for many years seriously affected his life and studies. Before surgery, D had been taking many anti-epileptic drugs with the maximum dose of his weight.

When arriving at Viet Duc University Hospital, D was thoroughly examined by experts from the Center of Neurosurgery and performed para-clinical examinations by the hospital’s modern equipment system: 3.0 Tesla MRI machine; CT scan machine 256 rows, 512 slices; A PET/CT scan of brain metabolism to identify the lesions. In addition, the patient was also examined with EEG video for detecting discreet lesions in the motor area. After being consulted, the patient was operated by surgical methods such as: Early warning method of motor area, method of nerve positioning, method of preoperative cortical mapping and microsurgery to remove the affected area. Dr. Tran Dinh Van MSc., Department of Neurosurgery 1, who directly performed the surgery for D shared: injured area of D. brain is located in the posterior central gyrus, just a few milimeters from the motor area, so during surgery If the resection was careful, even a small mistake can cause damage to his further movement.

The surgery was successful, the lesion was completely removed. Currently, after surgery, he is stable, no paralysis, no sensory disturbances, no seizures after 1 week of surgery.

Dr. Tran Dinh Van MSc. re-examined patients after surgery.

Dr. Tran Dinh Van MSc. added: today, over 60% of epilepsy is in children, of which drug-resistant epilepsy is 20-30%. Drug-resistant epilepsy due to lesions of the motor or proximal motor region is a major challenge for neurosurgery due to its high risk and post-operative weakness.

Currently, Viet Duc University Hospital has performed surgery for more than 100 cases of drug-resistant epilepsy, in which, there are many cases of children with drug-resistant epilepsy with lesions in the motor area or near the motor area successfully operated.
