A 94 years old male traveled from Quang Ngai to Hanoi has successfully shoulder hemiarthroplasty

Doctors of Viet Duc University Hospital had successfully partial shoulder replacement also known as shoulder hemiarthroplasty for Mr. T.T.L. (94 years old, Quang Ngai). This is the oldest patient in Viet Nam received this procedure until this moment.
Dr. Luu Danh Huy – MSc, Deputy Head of Upper Extremities and Sport Medicine Department, Viet Duc University Hospital informs that on the findings from X ray showed injury of Mr. L humerus neck fracture in fragments associated with join dislocation that cannot perform the osteosynthesis by implant.
After consulting multiple disciplinary team of cardiovascular, anesthesia resuscitation, orthopedic trauma, doctors had decided to perform the shoulder hemiarthroplasty for patient.
Dr. Huy said, this is the oldest patient in Viet Nam received this procedure. Elderly patients with comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery will have a high risk of complications during surgery.
Additionally, elderly patients with osteoporosis then the risk of bones fracture when insert surgical instruments is really high, as well as anaphylaxis to cement inserted to instruments, death on operation table could be occurred.
Hence, the surgical team including anesthesiologist and orthopedic surgeon had carefully prepared, predicted of possible situations that might happen during and after the surgery to timely manage. The operation was successful after more than one hour.
According to doctors, after surgery, the elderly man was stable, monitoring continuously and starting rehabilitation at 24 hours after surgery and discharged after 5 days later.
