Recently, Viet Duc University Hospital took in a case of Mr. E. L (Male, 51 years old, France) was admitted to hospital due to motorbike accident one week ago. The patient came with hip trauma, unable to mobilize, cannot move by himself and used the wheelchair.

Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh, MD, PhD, Vice Director, Head of Upper Extremities and Sport Trauma Department share: After checking briefly on clinic diagnosed patient had hip trauma. The patient was scanning and performed necessary sub-clinical examination, on the result it showed right femoral fracture.

Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh, MD, PhD assessed that this is a type of fracture close to the femoral head, a rather special position due to the risk of difficulty in healing and the possibility of head necrosis. For cases over 50 years old with a fracture close to the head, the prognosis of bone healing is very difficult, so the combination of bones with nails or screws is not effective and prolongs the immobilization time of the patient. Doctors have carefully discussed with the patient and family based on professional judgment to make the decision to surgically replace hip totally with a minimally invasive surgical technique, using an artificial hip without cement, two movements with a small incision (5cm) make the post-operative work easy, reduce pain for the patient and the patient can sit up and walk only one day after surgery.

The hip replacement surgery for a 51-year-old French man at Viet Duc University Hospital took place within 20 minutes. The surgery helps the patient in a wheelchair to move around afterwards.

The 20-minute total hip replacement surgery went well. Mr. E.L was transferred to the ward fully awake; the surgical site was well ; he could sit up and practice rehabilitation after the analgesia after epidural surgery.
