Challenges resulting from the Covid -19 pandemic can not affect to the medical staff of Viet Duc University Hospital in treating and taking care of foreign patients

On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Liberation of Sai Gon on April 30th and the International Labor day on May 1st, also that time the Covid-19 epidemic was affecting nationally, however Viet Duc University Hospital as other medical facilities still receive the patients. The hospital has prepared as much as possible in preventing the spread of the disease, for increasing awareness of all hospital staff and employees, for assurance of health and safety of patients. At that time, the hospital received Mr. R.D, a German man, 52 years old, admitted to the emergency room for follow  the visceral perforation up.

 

Mr. R.D was traveling in Vietnam but got stuck here because of the Covid-19 pandemic and has rented an apartment in Cau Giay District, Hanoi, waited for chance of return home. Unfortunately, on the night of April 30th 2020, Mr R.D had severe abdominal pain and was taken to Viet Duc University Hospital by some his neighbours. 

 

 Dr. Bui Thanh Phuc – Department of Abdominal Emergencies, chief of duty shift that night checked the patient and diagnosed a case of visceral perforation, and performed the surgery on emergency. Dr. Phuc has conducted laparoscopic surgery smoothly for sutures of stomach perforation and drainage. Upon awaking, Mr. RD was worry and shared with help from one friend for German translation that he is currently living alone in Vietnam, no relative, has difficulty in walking because he has only one leg and German communication. Additionally, due to Mr.RD has left Germany over 3 months than the stipulated time, therefore health insurance is not valid to cover his treatment fees due to.

 

 

As soon as receiving patient information, the International Cooperation Department, the function is to manage and to support all foreigners coming to Viet Duc University Hospital for many purposes such as medical examination and treatment, work or study, has quickly contacted the German Embassy in Vietnam to looking for his family, report the patient’s condition to them and seeks the help. Besides that, the hospital also facilitated the hospitalization fees process that the patient will be assured of treatment.

 

More challenge that time is all international flights cancelled, and the patient had no way to return home. In such situation, the hospital continued to care the patient, also actively worked together with the Embassy and other authorities in hoping that Mr. R.D could return home as soon as his health condition is stable.

 

After 12 days of intensive treatment at the hospital, receiving the good care of the medical staff, Mr. R.D’s health gradually stabilized and he was able to be discharged. On May 24th, 2020, the patient was chartered on a “ rescue flight for citizens” organized by German Embassy, to return home. Before leaving, the patient shared “ Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and medical staff of Viet Duc University Hospital for their enthusiastic support and good care during my hospitalization- this is the milestone of my life.
