On the morning of May 23, Associate Professor Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of Spine Surgery Department, Viet Duc University Hospital said: we have planned to host a program “Free of charge of examination and consultation of kyphosis and scoliosis for children” on June 4, 2022 at Viet Duc University Hospital with the participation of leading experts on spine diseases.
The program conducts annually by the Department of Spine Surgery, with the hope that children have the above problem will be able to treat properly by leading experts in home and abroad.
Associate Professor Dinh Ngoc Son shared: today scoliosis is a common spine condition. The number of children with scoliosis accounts for 0.5 to 1% of the population. There are 3 major causes of scoliosis in children classified into three groups, Group 1: idiopathic or there’s no known causes of condition, usually appear when children begin to enter puberty. Group 2: Children have congenital malformations of the spine such as vertebral body defects, and vertebrae… Group 3: Prolonged bad posture such poor sitting posture in classroom, carry too heavy things, or the size of the desk and chair is not suitable for their age, rickets and malnutrition or injury due to accidents…
Similarly, kyphosis is also a common disease in adolescents and young adults. It can be caused by spontaneity, ankylosing spondylitis or also by sitting in bad position. If the children are not treated promptly, especially with scoliosis and kyphosis (before age 10 ), in the long term, the diseases will cause severe deformity of the spine and seriously affect the development of other internal organs such as lungs, chest, pectus carinatum, alveoli, causing the respiratory failure that threatening the health of children. For minor degree of condition, it makes the patient self-deprecating, and affecting their psycho-physiological development.
Early detection of kyphosis in children and timely treatment are extremely important, helps to prevent and reduce the above serious complications. However, management of scoliosis in young children is extremely difficult because their spine is still developing.
Currently, the Department of Spine Surgery, Viet Duc University Hospital is implementing the modern technology for accuracy of diagnose and treatment of the disease according to stage with suitable methods. For complicated cases, the department is advised by Professor Weinstein, America’s leading pediatric orthopedic specialist via online consultations as usual.
Associate Professor. Dinh Ngoc Son emphasized: if parents and relatives know how to detect abnormal changes in their child’s shape and spine, please quickly take them to specialized facilities and register for this program for timely examination and treatment. If the disease is detected early, children will only undergo conservative treatment such as changing their sitting posture in classroom, actively exercising, sport playing, wearing an orthopedic brace shirt… It helps children in preventing scoliosis from getting worse, avoiding unnecessary surgeries and changing their quality of life.
