Chronic lower extremity ischemia (or chronic lower extremity arterial disease) is a condition in which the aorta and arteries in the lower extremities are narrow or blocked, preventing blood flow to the lower extremities such as the muscles of the lower extremities, and other parts such as nerves, skin, etc. downstream. This leads to anaerobic metabolism and the production of more lactic acid, which causes pain in the legs during exercise, also known as claudication. As the disease progresses, the patient’s continuous walking distance will become shorter and shorter. It may only be painful to walk a few tens of meters. Later, the patient will have a constant feeling of pain in the lower extremities even at rest, and eventually ischemic signs such as skin ulcers, black necrosis of the toes, having to be amputated the limb causing disability or sepsis.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huu Uoc, MD, PhD, Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center, Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) – Chairman of Vietnam Vascular Disease Association said: Chronic lower extremity artery disease is a persistent and progressive stages. Therefore, patients with suggested signs need to be examined early to control factors that increase disease progression, minimize complications due to arterial occlusion, minimize disability for patients, and affect quality of patient’s life as well as the impact on family and society. The disease is common in elderly, diabetic, hypertensive, smoker, tobacco smoker for many years. However, recently the disease is more and more common in young middle-aged patients.
