Many young people are losing their weight control.

Weight gained quickly and lost control for a long time is a concerned issue of many young people today despite the fact they have applied many ways to  control. “Oversized” weight causes low self-esteem, anxiety, and potential diseases.

As an officer, for many years, Ms. TTH, 28 years old, has always weighed over 90kg. Living with worries and anxiety, Ms. H. resident in Nha Trang travelled to Hanoi and went to Viet Duc University Hospital to be examined, consulted and treated for her obesity.

In Vietnam, the obesity rate has increased rapidly, from 2.6% in 2010 to 3.6% in 2014, equivalent to an increase of 38%. Dr. Phuc, MD, PhD also said: The leading cause of obesity in Vietnam is the increase in the modern lifestyle of Vietnamese people. Energy-rich foods and fast foods are available more and more in Vietnamese meals. Meanwhile, healthy foods such as green vegetables and fruits are not good enough, replaced by fried chicken, fast foods and soft drinks … these foods cause the overweight and obesity.

 The statistics also show a marked decline in physical activity over the past 50 years. The use of electrical appliances at home and work, better transportation, less free time for physical activity, especially watching television and video games, are all linked to lower levels of physical activity and an increased risk of obesity.

Doctors recommend that obesity is a modern-day disease that is increasing at an alarming signal, a risk to shortening life expectancy and affecting the quality of life, requiring early treatment. Obesity not only affects life and aesthetics, but also causes many risks of disease development such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, fatty liver, cirrhosis, musculoskeletal problem, infertility…

Treatment of overweight and obesity is a multi disciplinary specialties such as nutrition, physical activity, weight loss medicine, surgery, counselling, and psychological treatment. Young patients need early treatment to prevent the impairment to their activities and reproductive health later.
