End of October, while one the training ground with her teammates, unfortunately Tuoi got an injury of knee joint caused her leg weakness. She has visited many hospitals but with belief in the professionals and ethnic of Viet Duc University Hospital’s (VDUH) doctors, she directly contacted with Ass. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh MD,PhD., Vice Director of Trauma and Orthopedic Institute, Chief of Upper Extremities Surgery and Sport Medicine for a consultation and treatment.

Player Pham Thi Tuoi is directly consulted and treated by Ass. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh PhD., Vice Director of Trauma and Orthopedic Institute, Chief of Upper Extremities Surgery and Sport Medicine.

Ass. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh MD,PhD. said: Ms Nguyen Thi Tuoi visited VDUH with condition of leg weakness after a sport injury, loosening of left knee joint, tearing the meniscus, rupturing the posterior cross ligament and injuring a partial anterior cross ligament.

On November 17th, 2020, VDUH’s doctors performed arthroscopy for Ms Tuoi for meniscus repair and allograft reconstruction for posterior cross ligament by All-inside method. It is a minimal invasive surgery, which is firmly fixed in preventing further injury to bone and soft tissue and to help a patient for early rehabilitation to recover and play sport as before. In post-operative time, knee joint is stable, no swelling at surgical site, small scar, no pain, then the patient will have rehabilitation right after operation.

MRI result shows that the patient has meniscus tear, rupture of posterior cross ligament, injury of anterior cross ligament.

Ass. Prof. Khanh said: rupture of cross ligament is one of the most common injuries in knee joint. Resulting the knee joint to be loose and unstable. If the patient is not diagnosed and treated by the right way, it can be affected to other structures in the joint such meniscus, cartilage, in the long-term, it causes joint degeneration, and the patient cannot walk normally or cannot play sports as before .

In the meantime, when a meniscus is torn, the patient feels painful, uncomfortable and it will affect to his knee joint’s movement dimension. The serious torn meniscus cases can make the patient lost the movement of his knee joint. Patient usually feels the symptoms right at the knee joint after direct or indirect injury; pain at the joint when pressing a finger to the knee joint; knee fluid effusion, sign of joint jam when walking or flexing, patient feels or hear a rattle sound in joints, atrophy of vastus medialis muscular usually due to a consequence of less movement at the pain side.

That’s why, when seeing those above symptoms, especially right after having an injury or collision, we need to think about the torn meniscus and consult with a specialized doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment plan. The patient need to be treated the injury until full recovery to play sport again, prevent the situation, that having a new injury while the old injury is still remained, causing the difficulties in practicing  and resulting he long term consequences.

Ass. Prof. Nguyen Manh Khanh MD, PhD. visited for the patient after surgery

According to the treatment plan of doctors, after 4-5 month after surgery, Ms. Pham Thi Tuoi can return to the football towards to the goal of 31th SEA Games which will be held in Vietnam. Wish her soon recover, come back to the pitch, continue dream and dedicate for the national sports.
