Studying and applying Lean management methods integrating digitalization of medical examination and treatment services – Task at National Science and Technology level.

Viet Duc University Hospital was assigned by the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality to be the host in coordinating with the Productivity Institute to perform the national science and technology task ” Studying and applying the Lean management solution integrating digitalization of medical examination and treatment services”, under the “National program supporting businesses to improve productivity and quality of products and goods in the period of 2021 – 2030” to make a basis for improvement in method, to introduce and replicate for the health sector in Vietnam. In order to effectively implement the task, on April 29, the hospital held a Lean training session for the core group at Viet Duc University Hospital.
Attending the opening ceremony of training program, from the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Vietnam, there was Mr.Vu Hong Dan, MA – Head of Consulting Department – Productivity Institute. On the side of Viet Duc University Hospital, there were Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang, MD,PhD – Director of the hospital and members participating in the task, helping successfully deploy the application of lean management method to integrate digitalization of medical examination and treatment at Viet Duc University Hospital.
Hospital is a central part of the healthcare system that provides socially important health care services. Core medical process supported by multiple procedures, high requirements for quality, individualization for each patient, be able to acquire in time implement, and cost effectiveness. Nowadays, these support processes are mostly inefficiencies in many hospitals due to their historical development and paper-based activities. This means that administrative work in hospitals in particular accounts for a large proportion of time for medical staff. As a result, the core activities that create actual value for diagnosing, treating and caring for the sick are reduced seriously.
Therefore, in an effort to improve the quality of medical services and the efficiency of hospital operations along with focusing on improving professional qualifications, hospitals around the world also explore, research, applying 4.0 medical technologies and lean management methods (Lean) to improve the performance of the healthcare supply chain and improve service quality.
In Vietnam, the application of Lean to improve productivity and quality mainly applied in businesses. Only a few hospitals apply this model, but in a limited scope.
In the program, the participants listened to Mr. Vu Hong Dan – Head of Consulting Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality, introduced an overview of lean management methods (LEAN), presented the application of Lean management methods (LEAN) into the medical examination and treatment process at the hospital; A number of technical tools to reduce waste and streamline the outpatient examination process. Therefrom, giving solutions to improve the labor process, reduce waste, shorten working time and improve productivity and quality of work also improving the satisfaction and image of the hospital.
Through this program, Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang – Director of Viet Duc University Hospital hopes: Leaning in healthcare and improving hospital quality will be the key to solving problems in the operating system towards professional expertise and medical services, improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, bringing the best medical services to the people.
