Recently, doctors from the Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine Center, Viet Duc University Hospital, has successfully performed intervention on emergency for management of Mr. K.D., 28 years old, residing in Dak G’long, Dak Nong who coughed massive bleeding.
From investigation, doctors were on duty that day learned that Mr. K.Đ had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis for many years, but was not fully treated. A few days before being admitted to the hospital, he was positive with Covid-19 and isolated at home. On 9th February, the patient suddenly coughed up massive bleeding and was brought to the emergency room at the Central Lung Hospital. Through examination, the large pseudo-aneurysm of the right bronchial artery was found in the cavernous tuberculosis that caused a massive hemoptysis. The patient was then transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital for endovascular intervention to control bleeding.
About that case, Dr. Le Thanh Dung – Head of Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine Center, Viet Duc University Hospital shared : “As soon as we received the information of that patient, we immediately consulted and proposed an intervention plan, activating the treatment process for management of patients infected with Covid-19. The treatment process was very urgent, because the patient should be bleeding again at any time and threaten his life. Fortunately, the intervention went smoothly without any further complications.”
Right after the intervention, the patient was transferred to the National Lung Hospital, continued his medical treatment. At the moment, the patient is stable, no longer coughing up blood. All the intervention costs are covered by health insurance.
Hemoptysis due to bronchial artery ecstasy is a serious complication with a high recurrence rate. If not treated promptly, the patient can die from respiratory failure or hemorrhagic shock. Therefore, doctors recommend, if you cough up blood, the patient should immediately go to a medical facility for examination, detection of the cause and prompt treatment.
Emergency embolization is a minimally invasive, safe, effective, and innovative method. Viet Duc University Hospital, with a team of highly skilled and experienced, well provided a modern, synchronous medical equipment system, has successfully performed many difficult cases. Thereby, helping patients to be received timely treatment, avoid invasive interventions or major surgery, reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality.
Doctors from the Medical Imaging & Nuclear Medicine Center, Viet Duc University Hospital have received and treated many patients positive with SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, associated with severe bleeding injuries caused by liver rupture, spleen rupture, kidney rupture… in the last day, Dr. Dung added. However, for safety first to prevent the Covid-19 infection within hospital, we should comply with regulation on treatment of patients accordingly, both ensuring effective treatment for patients and keeping other patients and medical staff safe.
