After 6 hours under general anesthesia, surgeons at Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) successfully removed a giant lymphatic tumor on the body of a 1-month-old boy.

Giang A D received support from the Child Protection Fund to transfer from Hagiang to Hanoi for examination and surgery.

That is the case of Giang A D, male, 1 month old, a H’Mong ethnic person. D. has had a large tumor occupied half of his face, neck and body since he was born. Supported by doctors and Child Protection Fund of Bacme district, Hagiang province, the patient was transferred from Hagiang to Hanoi for examination. There, he was consulted in 3 hospitals: Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, Hanoi Medical University Hospital and VDUH. The doctors agreed to transfer the patient to VDUH for surgery. Despite the complicated development of the COVID-19 epidemic, VDUH still guarantees the safety of patients who come for examination and treatment, especially who come due to severe and complicated diseases.

The giant tumor took over D.’s face

Nguyen Viet Hoa. MD,PhD – Chief of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery Department, VDUH, said: The patient came to the hospital with a giant lymphatic tumor and was indicated for surgery. Because D. and both his parents had severe dermatitis, therefore we treated their skin for 2 weeks before surgery. Although the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery was overload with patients, D. was still arranged a private room to avoid cross-infection. All his clothes were washed separately.

The child’s health was getting worse and worse because the tumor increased in size rapidly due to internal bleeding. He got 2 blood transfusions. If the patient had not been operated on immediately, he would have been in high risk of death from hemorrhagic shock. Under the direction of the Director ‘s Board, the surgeons of the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery carefully consulted with the top experts of the Center of Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care, the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center (VDUH) and decided to operate on the patient on May 10th 2021. The patient was intubated, it took 3 hours alone to get the patient under anesthesia and the surgery lasted for another 3 hours. After the surgery, the tumor was completely removed from the patient’s body.

Currently, the child’s condition has greatly improved, he has been nursing well, and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.

Nguyen Viet Hoa, MD, PhD – Chief of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery Department, VDUH, directly operated on the patient.

Holding her baby in her arms, Ms. Chang Thi B, D’s mother said: he is my third child. Both her and her husband are farmers in remote areas so their life is extremely difficult, “With the help of generous sponsors and doctors from VDUH, my son was given a chance at life. I am so touched and grateful!”. The poor mother could not hold back her tears of pity, wishing her child a peaceful life!
