At Viet Duc University Hospital, there are always miracles with records for the first time in Vietnam. 4 years ago, in March 2017, a boy – N.T. D., 10 years old, in Hanoi, at that time the youngest heart transplant pediatric in Vietnam was revived from a brain-dead donor. Current health status of D. is very well and can help mom with housework. Today, 7-year-old LXH patient in Hanoi, the youngest heart transplant recipient in Vietnam up to now and undergoing a heart transplant from adults to children, was discharged with joy of family and physicians at Viet Duc University Hospital.
Before that, 7-year-old pediatric patient L.X.H weighed only 16 kg, had dilated cardiomyopathy, end-stage of heart failure. Tests showed severe heart failure, and must use high-dose heart-relieving drugs continuously. Recently, the condition is getting worse and worse, all treatment methods for the child are ineffective. The child has only one chance of life if there were a heart for transplantation. Luckily, while life only counted in days, the child is donated by a young male brain-dead who lost in a traffic accident. The organ score of both donor and recipient is completely consistent, although the donor’s body index is 3.5 times that of the pediatric patient. Not going to ignore the “golden” moment to save patient’s life, on February 1st, 2021, doctors decided to have a heart transplant for L.X.H.
In a very long list of patients waiting for a heart transplantation, under the direct guidance of Prof. Tran Binh Giang, MD, PhD – Director of Viet Duc University Hospital, hospital’s leading experts have consulted and decided to have a heart transplant for LXH, because priority is given to pediatric patients, the donor is quite small in size, and his heart condition is very severe, has to use high heart-aid – cannot wait any longer.
As a leading expert in the field of heart, lung and heart complex heart surgery, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Huu Uoc – Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center, Viet Duc University Hospital, said: brain-dead organ donation, the chance of finding a suitable donor for a heart transplantation for a child is almost impossible. Therefore, the heart transplantation for the youngest patient in Vietnam always leave him unforgettable memories. Miracles are created, patient is saved, that is the greatest happiness of a physician.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Dan, MD, MS – Deputy Head of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Intensive Surgical Care Department, Viet Duc University Hospital examined patient before discharge day.
Accompanying her child during the life-winning journey, Ms. NVD, his mother emotionally shared: “First of all, I am very thankful to the donor’s family for giving my children an opportunity to live with a new life. I would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center for loving, treating and caring for my child. This grace will not be forgotten for the rest of my life”.
Both heart transplantations for the youngest patient in Vietnam were successfully performed at Viet Duc University Hospital and were completely performed by Vietnamese doctors, not only saving patients’ life in the midst of fragile death, but also confirmed the qualifications of Viet Duc University Hospital physicians in making miracles. Additionally, to achieve those feats, they – the silent white-shirted soldiers who performed the operations overnight, brain-tense moments to win patients’ life. In particular, two youngest heart transplant pediatric patients in Vietnam were revived from the donation organs of two brain-dead boys aged nineteen-twenties. Is it the arrangement of nature to revolve so that life can be extended.
