On 21st of April, Viet Duc University Hospital has performed a microsurgery to “revive” 4 severed limbs during 2 weeks of social quarantine.
Accordingly, on 21st of April, Viet Duc University Hospital shares, doctors from Maxillo-facial, Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Department, Viet Duc University Hospital says, hospital successfully connected the forearm being severed by a rice pulverizer . This is only 1 of 4 cases of severely large limbs (3 forearms, 1 forearm) are “revived” by microsurgery at Viet Duc University Hospital in 2 weeks of social distancing to prevent and control Covid -19.
Five days after surgery, on the morning of April 20, the broken forearm was actually “revived” on the disabled arm of Mr. T.D.T.
Until now, Mr. T.D.T (44 years old, Ha Nam) is still shocked when he remembers the moment his forearm was cut off by blades of a rice pulverizer. Mr. T.D.T said, his family’s economy depends on the business of making vermicelli. When this accident happened so suddenly, seeing his left forearm was cut off by the machine, blood flowed down, made him becomes so panic and worry. Shortly afterwards, the blood was temporarily hold by his family and taken to Ha Nam General Hospital for first aid to stop the bleeding, relieve pain and preserve the broken arm, then immediately transferred to Viet Duc University Hospital.
After the examination, interdisciplinary consultation, doctors of Maxillo-facial, Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Department cooperated with doctors from Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery Department conducted an emergency micro surgery to reconnect broken forearm for patient.
Five days after surgery, on the morning of April 20, the broken forearm was actually “revived” on the disabled arm of Mr. T.D.T. His hand began to move and able to feel, along with the joy that appeared in Mr. T’s eyes and his family. Currently the patient is still under observation and intensive care at the department, in the future patient will still have to undergo rehabilitation training to be able to move just like before.
Dr. To Tuan Linh, Maxillo-facial, Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Department, the person directly involved in the operation said that like the other three cases, this was a very difficult operation because the injury was cut by blades of a rice pulverizer, injured at high place of 1/3 forearm, the organization and nerve vessels were crushed, there were many foreign objects attached, during the surgery, it is necessary to ensure no foreign objections and organization is broken but not to cut off too much to remain hand funtions after surgery. In addition, the re-coupling of blood vessels and nerves for patient was a very difficult technique, which must be done entirely under a microscope with very small tools and needles.
According to Ass. Prof. Nguyen Hong Ha – Chief of Maxillo-facial, Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Department, Viet Duc University Hospital receives hundreds of cases every year for patients with severed body parts such as limbs, scalp, lips, nose, ears, penis due to various accident causes. It is not uncommon for special cases such as cuts of both hands, feet or combined injuries in other severe traumatic conditions. These are complex cases, because severity of two arms or legs is a serious injury that not only threatens patient life, but the loss of both arms or legs at the same time can seriously affect after life and activities of patient. Hence, there are nights when the hospital had to mobilize many surgical teams working 10 hours to 15 hours continuously to combine bones, tendons and joints, blood vessels, nerves with micro-surgery to save life for both limbs as well as patient. Ass. Prof. Nguyen Hong Ha also added that injuries caused by accidental organ injuries are common in developing countries like Vietnam, each person needs to improve their sense of self-protection and working safety to avoid unfortunate accidents may occur.
It is known that in the past 2 weeks, during the period of social distancing to prevent and control Covid-19, hospital has received emergency treatment to reconnect for 4 cases of separated forearm and lower leg like Mr. T.D.T. Viet Duc University Hospital is always ready to organize 24/7 emergency services for all patients who have been appointed to transplant organs such as limbs, scalp, lips, nose, penis so that no patient has to losing precious body parts even during an epidemic.
