This morning, October 4, the second patient who received a lung transplant from a brain-dead person at Viet Duc University Hospital (VDUH) was fully recovered. This is a special mark of Vietnamese health, because it is a complete lung transplant performed by Vietnamese experts and a lung transplant patient from the brain-dead first discharged.
More than 1 month ago, Viet Duc University Hospital announced the event of 15 organ transplants in 6 days, including the second lung transplant at hospital. The recipient is Mr. N.V.K. 38 years old, suffered from end-stage all bronchodilator disease, but without a lung transplant, the life time was only in months.
Taking Mr. K. home, his wife, Ms. Nguyen Thi H. was moved: When there was information about the death of the brain, the whole family was very happy and full of hope, so they mobilized all resources to have the amount of 1.5 billion dong for the transplant. The double lung transplant took place continuously for nearly 15 hours and after three weeks, he was able to meet his family. He filled with emotion and just said “so happy”.
At the ceremony to see the patient leaving the hospital, Prof. Nguyen Huu Uoc – Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center – said, taking care of patients with lung transplantation is the most difficult in organ transplants because they have to control infection, respiratory care, anti-rejection medicine, rehabilitation and improve the patient’s condition. This requires hospital fully equipped to have patients to be healthy, to return to the community. But with the level, experience and close coordination between the specialists, with a skilled workforce and a high level of perseverance and patience during the care process, the lung transplant patient has completely stabilized to be discharged.
After 7 weeks of intensive care, Mr. K.’s life has turned to another page. Eating, living, and breathing are not as difficult as he used to be. “Without the donors and the dedicated doctors, my family certainly wouldn’t have today. We would like to express our condolences to the family of the deceased and express our deep gratitude to them for the noble act of giving honor to my husband and being reborn”- his wife K. shares
Earlier, Viet Duc University Hospital also conducted the first successful lung transplant from a brain-dead person. The recipient was a 17-year-old patient with terminal lung disease (a special form of cancer) and severe organ failure. The surgery was successful, which is the premise for hospital to perform the second transplant.
Prof. Tran Binh Giang – Director of Viet Duc University Hospital said that with the success of two lung transplants from brain-dead people, it has once again confirmed the capacity of hospital in the field of organ transplants. Because organ transplants from brain-dead people require preparation very urgently, the coordination between the specialties, especially the organization and administration stages of the leaders must be tight. This result also opens up the opportunity for Viet Duc University Hospital to soon integrate lung transplant into routine technology, saving more lives.
Also on October 4, Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang announces the decision to establish Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center, on the basis of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department.
Prof. Tran Binh Giang emphasized that over the past 60 years, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Department has performed thousands of complicated heart surgeries and developed thoracic heart surgery techniques equivalent to many countries, at the same time, cardio technology transfer for hospitals throughout the country. In particular, there are 26 cases of heart transplantation and two successful lung transplants. Upgrading the Faculty into the Center will help the Center continue to focus on developing and expanding such specialties as internal medicine, cardiovascular intervention, respiration, internal resuscitation and post-cardiac rehabilitation …, with closed diagnosis and treatment cycle.
